Penn College is scheduled to open its season on Saturday, hosting Juniata College in a doubleheader that starts at noon at the Lycoming Valley Intermediate School.

Penn College was the top collector in the United East Conference's fourth annual "United Feast" food drive, organized by the members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The initiative, which ran Jan. 30-Feb. 8, had each of the United East’s 14 member colleges collect canned goods and other nonperishables for local food banks.

Wins by the wrestling, women’s basketball and men’s lacrosse teams made for a super Saturday. The wrestling team successfully defended its title as conference champion, and the women’s basketball team is headed to the playoffs.

Forty-two girls, in kindergarten to sixth grade, attended Penn College’s annual Girls and Women in Sports Day Clinic on Feb. 8, where they not only received instruction from Penn College’s women’s athletes and coaches, but learned wider lessons about self-esteem and what it means to be a girl in sports.

The Wildcats are scheduled to open their season with a nonconference match on Saturday at Susquehanna University.

Another double-win week moved the women’s basketball team to within one victory of tying the program’s season win record. On Saturday, the Wildcat wrestlers will defend their conference title, the basketball teams close their regular seasons, lacrosse opens its season, and archery travels to the USA Archery Indoor Championships.

The Journey Bank Community Arts Center was the unique venue for the Penn College wrestling team’s dual meet against the York College Spartans. It’s the second time the wrestling team has competed at the historic theater.

A two-win week allowed the women’s basketball team not only to surpass last season’s win total, but to match the most wins since the 2008-09 squad won 16 games. The victories also clinched a United East Conference postseason playoff berth.

Last week, four Pennsylvania College of Technology wrestlers reached the podium in an invitational, and the basketball teams split in their games, each winning once and falling once.

For over 30 years, its stage has hosted titans of the entertainment industry. Next week, the Journey Bank Community Arts Center will be home to dedicated NCAA Division III student-athletes, who will have their well-deserved turn in the spotlight.
