Another hands-on activity was held Friday to supplement the "Japan Juxtaposed: Traditional Textiles/Modern Images" exhibit in The Gallery at Penn College (Madigan Library, third floor) through Aug. 6. The workshop, "Stitched Shibori on Pashmina Scarves," was held in the library and at the Bush Campus Center.

The automobile industry's future, of keen interest to the automotive teachers mentoring tomorrow's vehicle technicians, is today's reality at Penn College. The North American Council of Automotive Instructors, holding its 35th annual conference on campus, heard presentations Tuesday on vehicles that use technology to reduce petroleum dependency and greenhouse-gas emissions.

Technology and straight-from-the-headlines topicality combine with socializing and sightseeing at this week's 35th annual conference of the North American Council of Automotive Teachers being hosted at Penn College. More than 200 instructors registered for the event, which began Monday morning with elections and a keynote address in the college's Klump Academic Center.

The eighth annual NRM Golf Invitational, held July 9 at the White Deer Golf Course, proved a fun outing for participants and another success for students in Penn College's School of Natural Resources Management. A total of 64 golfers took part, including industry representatives, 16 alumni and 20 college employees among them Wayne R. Longbrake, retired dean of the school.

Ninth- and 10th-graders in this week's Penn College's SMART Girls residential program, an initiative that provides young women the opportunity to experience math and science as a foundation for careers in technology, traveled Tuesday to the Schneebeli Earth Science Center south of main campus.

Joseph E. LeBlanc, instructor of physics, told the stories of "Momotaro, the Peach Boy" and "Ken'ichi and His Magic Pen" Tuesday in The Gallery at Penn College, in conjunction with the "Japan Juxtaposed: Traditional Textiles/Modern Images" exhibit that runs through Aug. 6. LeBlanc lived in Japan for several years.

"Japan Juxtaposed: Traditional Textiles/Modern Images," the first exhibit of the 2008-09 academic year, opened Tuesday in The Gallery at Penn College (Madigan Library, third floor). The exhibit, which fittingly began with a sushi-and-sake reception, features textiles from the personal collection of Joseph E.

A group of North American automotive instructors will gather this month at Pennsylvania College of Technology, home to the industry's oldest continually operating, postsecondary program in the United States.

The Pennsylvania College of Technology Foundation and the School of Hospitality combined efforts recently to offer a reception honoring those who have established scholarships at the college, at the same time providing a unique capstone project for students in the baking and pastry arts major.

The Gallery at Penn College, on the third floor of Pennsylvania College of Technology's Madigan Library, will open its 2008-09 slate in July with "Japan Juxtaposed: Traditional Textiles/Modern Images." It is the first of 11 exhibits for the academic year, which represent a wide variety of expression. "Japan Juxtaposed" opens July 8 with a reception in the gallery scheduled for 5-7 p.m.
