Girls entering ninth, 10th and 11th grades stayed on Pennsylvania College of Technology's main campus July 10-14 to participate in the annual SMART Girls residential activity. The girls participated in workshops on campus to enhance their knowledge of nontraditional careers – and the usefulness of science and mathematics courses in those potential professions.
The Gallery at Penn College, on the third floor of Madigan Library, presents " Bodies Under Pressure," a collection of sculptures by Douglas Tausik, through Aug. 21. The gallery hosted a Meet the Artist Reception, with comments from Tausik, on Thursday evening. Through July 31, the gallery is open from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. Regular hours resume Aug.
Participants in Penn College's summer Camp ESCAPE program visited Penn's Cave on Wednesday. The group went on the water cavern ride, where the temperature inside was a cool 52 degrees. The Gallery at Penn College, on the third floor of Pennsylvania College of Technology's Madigan Library, will host "Bodies Under Pressure," a collection of sculptures by Douglas Tausik, from July 12 to Aug. 21. Tausik's sculptures are organic in form or, as the artist asserts, matter-of-fact representations of the invisible forces that affect a body as it undergoes transition.
The Gallery at Penn College will host the traveling exhibit "Intruding Umbrellas," by members of the Society for the Art of Imagination, from July 14 to Aug. 28 in The Madigan Library. The exhibit, which will be displayed in the library atrium, originated at the Zendai Museum of Modern Art in Shanghai as part of a citywide project.
Pennsylvania College of Technology's Outreach for K-12 Office was awarded a grant from the Central Pennsylvania Workforce Development Corp. to broaden the knowledge among students, teachers and parents about what is made in their back yards, and of the significant impact manufacturing continues to have on the region.
Pennsylvania College of Technology hosted approximately 40 high school students on its campus June 15-16 to learn about a variety of health careers. The Health Careers Camp, open to students entering grades nine to 12, offered hands-on workshops and the ability to network with Penn College students and faculty, as well as working professionals in the health care industry.
Industry representatives visited the plastics facilities at Penn College this week for the Plastics Manufacturing Center's three-day National Hands-On Thermoforming Workshop.
Youngsters in Penn College's summer Camp ESCAPE program visited the Pennsylvania Game Commission on Wednesday. When the campers arrived, they thought they were only there to learn about Pennsylvania wildlife from one of the game wardens ... but they also got to see a live bear!
Camp ESCAPE went to The Penn State All Sports Museum and Creamery on Wednesday, learning all about The Pennsylvania State University's rich athletic tradition and which teams have won national championships. The museum features many hands-on exhibits, as well as video clips from selected sporting events. The campers also really enjoyed the Berkey Creamery, where they all had a tasty cold treat!
