Student Wildcats of Robotic Design hosted its annual Fall Robot Competition recently, with 'bots battlin' it out in Penn College's Field House. Winners claimed honors in the 3-pound beetleweight and 1-pound antweight categories.

Nearly two dozen engineering design technology students recently visited High Steel Structures LLC in Williamsport to learn about the renowned company’s structural fabrication and design processes. Led by instructors Kendra N. Tomassacci and Catherine A. Krawiec, 23 students from two sections of CCD 237 Technical Drawing-Related Disciplines made the short trip to bridge classroom learning with real-world experience.

As a kid, Eli R. Rush fell in love with roller coasters. As an adult, he’s turned that passion into a livelihood. The Pennsylvania College of Technology alumnus is a designer for a renowned manufacturer and builder of coasters. Rush, of Elysburg, works for Great Coasters International Inc. Headquartered in Sunbury, the company has crafted award-winning wooden roller coasters for amusement parks throughout North America, Europe and Asia.

Penn College’s Engineering & Industrial Design Technology Department held its annual SolidWorks Pumpkin Carving Contest last week. The fall tradition tests students on their “carving” abilities, as they craft virtual jack-o'-lanterns with computer software. Three winners were selected in each of two sections of Technical Drawing I and Detailing I.

For Penn College students seeking job or internship opportunities, Career Services has scheduled two Pop-Up Employer Information Tables on campus this week: On Monday, Oct. 28, Letterkenny Army Depot is hosting a table in the Hager Lifelong Education Center lobby (outside of KDR) from 10 am to 2 pm. On Wednesday, Oct. 30, Friends in Action is hosting a table in the Carl Building Technologies Center hallway from 10 am to 2 pm.

Clark W. Fuller faced a crossroads: continue to muddle through school or strive for excellence. The Pennsylvania College of Technology alumnus chose the latter. Today, as a key contributor for an aerospace startup, he is grateful for that wise decision. Fuller is modeling and simulation lead at Hop Flyt, which aspires to be a trailblazer in the advanced aerial mobility industry. Based in Salisbury, Maryland, the company is developing electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.

Two Pennsylvania College of Technology students brought home medals from the 2024 SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in Atlanta, while all of the college’s competitors finished in the top 10 in their categories. SkillsUSA’s National Leadership & Skills Conference involved 6,450 collegiate and high school competitors in 115 career competitions.

Students from Pennsylvania College of Technology’s School of Engineering Technologies top the list of scholarship recipients from a national foundation devoted to skilled manufacturing careers. Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs, the charitable foundation of the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, awarded the scholarships – each worth up to $2,000 – to full-time undergraduate students enrolled in a certificate or degree program leading to a manufacturing career.

Thirty high school students discovered career possibilities connected to science, technology, engineering and math during the recent hands-on Tinker Camp at Pennsylvania College of Technology. Supported by grants from Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs, the Gene Haas Foundation and EQT Corp., the three-day camp introduced students to engineering design, manufacturing, polymer engineering, 3D printing and welding.

Throughout its 19-year history, Pennsylvania College of Technology’s team has crisscrossed the country to compete at Baja SAE. This year, they only must travel a dozen miles from campus to test their skills, a reality that should aid last-minute preparations for the international event. Penn College is hosting Baja SAE for the first time, May 16-19, at its Heavy Equipment Operations Site in Brady Township.
