Among the many end-of-academic-year field trips enjoyed by Penn College students, a group of diesel and electric power generation students visited Cleveland Brothers Equipment Co.’s Ebensburg rebuild facility.

It’s that time of year again: Penn College’s Schneebeli Earth Science Center is rolling out the “greenhouse carpet,” inviting shoppers to its annual bedding plant sale. The much-anticipated event begins Monday, May 5 and runs through Wednesday, May 7. Sale hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, with Wednesday’s hours 9 a.m. to noon.

Pennsylvania College of Technology landscape/plant production technology students are reaping the rewards they earned at the 49th annual National Collegiate Landscape Competition, held recently at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. Penn College’s contingent of 18 students achieved an excellent showing in the three-day event, placing 18th out of 54 schools, thanks to top finishes by seven students.

“Bringing Nature Back: One Yard at a Time!” is the title of a day-long workshop set for Saturday, March 15, in Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Klump Academic Center Auditorium. Featuring talks by two Penn College employees, the event is presented by Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Lycoming County in partnership with the Responsible Decarbonization Alliance.

Two Pennsylvania College of Technology forest technology graduates and their new business are featured in “The Grain,” the monthly newsletter of the Keystone Wood Products Association. In the article titled “Branching Out: Industry Professionals Unite,” Cody A. Campion, ’11, and Zachery G. Hess, ’12, are welcomed as new members of the association. They own Keystone Timber & Forestry LLC, based in New Columbia, about 10 miles south of where they met – at the college’s Schneebeli Earth Science Center.

Fourteen Pennsylvania College of Technology students have passed various sections of the Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator Certification exam. The students are enrolled in Penn College’s landscape/plant production and forest technology majors. “Students with this certification are what many employers are looking for,” said Carl J. Bower Jr., assistant professor of horticulture.

A group of Penn College landscape/plant production technology students took in the Mid-Atlantic Nursery Trade Show, held last week at the Baltimore Convention Center. Considered a key resource for anyone seeking a competitive edge in the green industry, MANTS is a hub for networking, professional development and discovering the newest horticulture products and trends.

Pennsylvania College of Technology and Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity joined on Thursday at the site of a Habitat home to observe the national day of mourning for President Jimmy Carter, who died on Dec. 29 at 100 years old. The nonprofits, working together to build a three-bedroom home at 508 Fifth Ave., lowered a U.S. flag at the building site in memory of the late president. Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter were longtime Habitat for Humanity volunteers.

Connecting the next generation of diesel technicians with their future mentors and employers, Pennsylvania College of Technology’s fourth annual Diesel Technology Competition hosted 24 participants from 13 career and technical education centers in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Connecticut.

Four Pennsylvania College of Technology students have been awarded scholarships totaling $4,500 from the Pennsylvania Landscape & Nursery Association Foundation. The 2024-25 PLNA Foundation Scholarship recipients are: Morgan R. Max, a forest technology student from Pipersville, and three landscape/plant production technology students: Jahrell M. Harper, of Bloomsburg; Jake A. Seasock, of Lancaster; and Saudiah Wells, of Williamsport.
