Jackie Sampson, of Liberty , a graduate of Liberty High School , has been named Pennsylvania College of Technology's "Student-Athlete of the Week" for Oct. 1-7. Sampson, a junior nursing student, stood out like a "David" among "Goliaths" during a recent volleyball tournament at Lycoming College against NCAA Division III teams and the All-Armed Forces squad.
Due to scheduling and travel snafus, Penn College's baseball team will end its season with a doubleheader at Penn State Beaver on Saturday, rather than playing in the four-team Penn State University Athletic Conference Mid-Season Classic. Mark Shaffer of Hanover, a graduate of South Western High School , has been named Pennsylvania College of Technology's "Student-Athlete of the Week" for Sept. 25-30. Shaffer, a sophomore majoring in heating, ventilation and air conditioning technology, has compiled a 5-1 pitching record with a 1.20 earned run average in 27 innings of work for the college's baseball team.
Although he ran on both the cross country and track teams while a student at Williamsport Area High School in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Mike Paulhamus was very "green" during his first season as Pennsylvania College of Technology cross country coach. Alyssa Covas, of Pottsville, a graduate of Minersville Area High School, has been named Pennsylvania College of Technology's "Student-Athlete of the Week" for Sept. 16-22. Covas, a sophomore pre-nursing student, chose to postpone her entry into the military and remain at Penn College for an additional semester and it has paid dividends for the college women's volleyball team.
The Pennsylvania College of Technology golf team finished its regular-season matches Tuesday with a victory at the Links at Spring Church in Apollo. The team shot a total of 314, which was 21 strokes better than the closest competitor: Penn State New Kensington. The score allowed the golf team to secure first place in the Western Division of the PSU Athletic Conference.
Pennsylvania College of Technology golfers led a five-team field to claim victory in Thursday's Penn State Mont Alto Tournament at the Penn National course in Fayetteville. Leading the way individually for the Wildcats was junior Doug Wagner, of Huntington Mills, who shot a 78 and the only round in the 70s among the competing colleges.
