The well-appointed welding labs of Penn College's Avco-Lycoming Metal Trades Center were the venue for Friday's annual American Welding Society competition involving 20 students from the college's School of Industrial and Engineering Technologies and five each from Columbia Montour Area Vocational-Technical School, SUN Area Technical School and Williamsport Area High School.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance campaign, in which Pennsylvania College of Technology students partner with The Salvation Army and Internal Revenue Service, is helping hundreds of eligible area residents prepare and file their returns this season.
Pennsylvania College of Technology students will use Harry Potter as the inspiration for their three-tier cake designs during the college's sixth-annual cake competition. Following judging, the students' cakes will be displayed for the public from 1-3 p.m. March 3 and from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. March 4 in the Mountain Laurel Room of the Thompson Professional Development Center.
The Penn College Ski and Snowboard Club, formed in November, is among the newest student organizations on campus. The group held its first meeting of the year in Penn's Inn (CC, second floor) last week, gauging interest in local skiing and snowboarding trips.
The student team jumped out quickly in Wednesday's annual basketball game en route to a 55-44 victory against its staff/faculty rivals. "The old saying of 'Living by the 3, dying by the 3' could never have been more true," said intramural assistant Jeremy R. Bottorf, recapping the game. "When the students were hitting their 3-pointers, they would have a double-digit lead.
Penn College Greek Life set high academic standards during the Fall 2010 semester, according to Erin M. Datteri, assistant director of student activities for Greek life and leadership. The all-Greek semester grade-point average was 2.720, above the collegewide all-student average of 2.523.
Penn College's Presidential Leadership Program Year One students went on an overnight retreat last weekend in Bucknell University's Cowen Conference Center, spending time in leadership activities specifically focused on the topic of collaboration.

Nine Penn College students, enrolled in the Italy Art and Architecture of Antiquity course, studied in Rome with adjunct faculty member Mark J. Mahosky from Dec. 27-Jan. 5. The students toured the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, and visited Pompeii and Herculaneum, Naples, the Vatican Museum and Necropolis. This is the ninth year for this study-abroad program.
Another appreciable overnight snowfall meant another morning workout for Penn College's community-minded student body. As part of "Operation Snowflake," campus organizations share shoveling duty at registered locations if a storm hits on their watch.
