A crew from Allison Crane and Rigging rode to the top of the 120-foot flagpole near Penn College's main entrance on Wednesday morning, repairing a cable that snapped during Friday's ice storm. The college's General Services staff hoisted the 30- by 60-foot American flag − part of the national Flags Across America initiative − shortly thereafter.
All Penn College students are encouraged to use the swimming facilities at the Williamsport YWCA free! Just bring your Penn College ID, sign in at the Information Desk and enjoy your swim. Students also may participate in all swimming classes, including aqua aerobics, deepwater aerobics and more also free of charge. The Williamsport YWCA is at 815 W. Fourth St., just a 10-minute walk from campus.
More than 200 students from Penn College and Lycoming College attended Saturday's second Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball at the Acacia Club in downtown Williamsport. The free event was sponsored by both colleges, and shuttle transportation was offered to provide students with safe passage to and from the semiformal dance. The Gallery at Penn College will host a digital photo stitching workshop with one of this semester's featured gallery artists, Gary Mesa-Gaido, on Feb. 16. Mesa-Gaido, professor of art at Moorehead (Ky.) State University, will teach participants to digitally stitch a series of photographs together to create a cohesive, panoramic image. Pennsylvania College of Technology's Schneebeli Earth Science Center is featured in the latest issue of a national trade magazine, in which horticulture faculty member Carl J. Bower Jr. details the addition of a conifer garden to the facility's 5-acre arboretum.
The dean of Pennsylvania College of Technology's School of Transportation Technology has been elected to a five-year term on the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation Board of Trustees. Colin W. Williamson joins a 15-member board that includes educators, manufacturers, automotive shop owners, automobile dealers, state and local administrators, and working technicians.
For those who have little or no understanding of the Spanish language and want to learn in a fun and relaxed setting, a Spanish for Fun and Conversation class will be offered at Pennsylvania College of Technology's North Campus near Wellsboro. Classes will be held on Thursdays − from 6:30 to 8 p.m. − Feb. 21 to May 1.
Through April 5, Penn College will be part of a 10-week recycling competition with colleges and universities nationwide to see who can recover the largest amount of recyclable materials based on per-capita campus population (includes students and faculty/staff). General Services will collect materials from recycling bins in academic and administrative buildings and in residence halls.
Despite the fact that the Pennsylvania College of Technology archery team graduated two archers who had achieved All-America status four times, coach Chad Karstetter is optimistic about this year's squad. Pennsylvania College of Technology men's volleyball coach Wes Strayer doesn't mince any words when it comes to this season's squad. "I lost all my starters. It's a total rebuilding year," he said as his team prepares for its season opener at 7 p.m. Saturday at Haverford. Despite the lack of collegiate playing experience, Strayer added, "I have some good kids.
