Alumnus Jeffrey L. Erdly, a longtime benefactor of Pennsylvania College of Technology with a distinguished career in the construction industry, was recently presented with an award by ASTM International, a standards organization that develops and publishes voluntary consensus technical standards for a range of materials, products, systems and services.
Erdly, a 1972 engineering drafting graduate of Penn College predecessor Williamsport Area Community College, received the Werner H. Gumpertz Award, which is presented to an ASTM member who has made significant professional contributions to the field of building technology and/or to multidisciplinary technical problem-solving in the construction industry. The award was presented at an ASTM meeting in Toronto.

The nominating materials for Erdly, the co-founder of Masonry Preservation Services Inc., note that he is “a nationally recognized expert in building envelope evaluation, repair and service life extension” who, during his 38-year tenure with MPS, “worked on more than 1,600 restoration projects for colleges and universities, hospitals, commercial buildings, institutions and industrial facilities.”
The nomination also cites Erdly’s many presentations at industry and professional events on masonry and facade inspection, as well as papers and articles he has written for the masonry restoration industry. He is also the co-editor of several ASTM special technical publications. The nomination references Erdly’s “extraordinary achievement connecting the realms of practice, research and scholarship in the service of more durable buildings and more knowledgeable and thoughtful practitioners.” He received ASTM’s Award of Merit in 2017, which includes the title of Fellow.
Erdly is a member of the Golden Society on Penn College’s Donor Wall, reflecting lifetime gifts of $500,000 to $999,999.
In August 2024, Erdly, the originator of two Pennsylvania College of Technology scholarships and a recipient of the college's Distinguished Alumnus Award, boosted his institutional support with a gift of $500,000 toward a project on campus.
Half of the donation is designated for the School of Engineering Technologies for an endowment that can be used for program materials, scholarships and more; the remaining $250,000 is earmarked for the creation of a materials library in the college’s Carl Building Technologies Center. The materials library, to be named for Erdly, will house numerous product samples used during the design and construction of buildings.
Erdly co-founded and was CEO of Masonry Preservation Services Inc., a building-facade-repair contractor headquartered in Bloomsburg, retiring in 2022 after 38 years. In retirement, he is a senior technical specialist with SKA Consulting Engineers.
A Selinsgrove native, Erdly created the Carl and Bonnie Erdly Memorial Scholarship at Penn College, which honors his late father and mother, as well as the Jeff Erdly Scholarship, which is awarded to graduates of Selinsgrove Area High School attending the college.
