A new scholarship at Pennsylvania College of Technology aims to assist students in the college's heavy construction equipment technology-technician major. The Groff Tractor and Equipment Inc./CASE Corporation Scholarship announced this week will provide a $1,500 award to a Penn College student each year, beginning in the Fall 2005 semester. The appointees listed below received College Council approval by a majority e-mail vote on Tuesday. Congratulations to Alfred Thomas, the winner of the tie-breaker election for the open Transportation Technology faculty position on the Curriculum Committee. An alumnus whose name is a familiar sight on highways from New York to Illinois to North Carolina made his first visit to the college this week since graduating 42 years ago. Mike Ward, who graduated from Williamsport Technical Institute's Diesel Technician program in 1963, recently retired as executive vice president of the Altoona-based Ward Trucking Corp.

Marie G. Smith, assistant professor of dental hygiene (center in photo at left), joined a group of students at their on-campus residence for an evening of making baked nuts using her favorite recipe. The activity was considered a study break for the students as they prepare for today's practical portion of their Dental Hygiene board exam.

Wendy Mertzeis, a Resident Assistant at Rose Street Apartments, recently was named Penn College's "Resident Assistant of the Month." A junior from Tionesta, majoring in Web Design, she is in her first year as a Resident Assistant.

The second annual "Monster Hut" competition is scheduled to take place this weekend. Four teams, each consisting of six students anda faculty adviser, will have from Friday afternoon until Sunday afternoon to build a pavilion on the grounds of one of Penn College's Residence Hall complexes. Teams may begin work at 3 p.m. Friday; final judging will occur at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Discussion of a timely topic and displays of student talent were among the highlights of Monday's School of Business and Computer Technologies Showcase and Advisory Committee meeting.

The Occupational Therapy Assistant Club is sponsoring a fund-raiser from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday in the ATHS lobby to help support a Habitat for Humanity project that benefits an alumna of the occupational therapy assistant program. Susan Getgen, a 1998 graduate of Penn College, has been selected as a recipient for a fully handicapped-accessible home.

Congratulations to Justin Wilcott, winner of The Bistro's renaming contest. Wilcott's suggestion of "CC Commons" will be the new name of the dining unit that will be open in the fall in the current Bistro area. For his idea,he received a $350 declining-balance meal plan for the Fall 2005 semester.
