Pennsylvania College of Technology recently appointed a director of mathematics and general education in the School of Integrated Studies. Paul Watson II began his duties on July 1.

The Marcellus Shale Education & Training Center has released a study assessing the direct workforce needs required to support Marcellus Shale development in Pennsylvania from 2011-14. The total number of direct jobs needed to keep pace with the growth of the industry is expected to range from 18,596 to 30,684, including 9,800 to 15,900 new positions.

Girls entering ninth, 10th and 11th grades stayed on Pennsylvania College of Technology's main campus July 10-14 to participate in the annual SMART Girls residential activity. The girls participated in workshops on campus to enhance their knowledge of nontraditional careers – and the usefulness of science and mathematics courses in those potential professions.

Dementro "Debo" Powell has begun work as the assistant director of student activities for diversity and cultural life at Pennsylvania College of Technology. "Debo has made an excellent addition to our Student Activities staff,"said Kimberly R. Cassel, director of student activities. The Gallery at Penn College, on the third floor of Madigan Library, presents " Bodies Under Pressure," a collection of sculptures by Douglas Tausik, through Aug. 21. The gallery hosted a Meet the Artist Reception, with comments from Tausik, on Thursday evening. Through July 31, the gallery is open from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. Regular hours resume Aug.

Participants in Penn College's summer Camp ESCAPE program visited Penn's Cave on Wednesday. The group went on the water cavern ride, where the temperature inside was a cool 52 degrees. Carolyn M. Jacobson has been named assistant dean of business and computer technologies at Pennsylvania College of Technology. "We are very pleased to have Dr. Jacobson join the School of Business and Computer Technologies at Penn College," said Paul L. Starkey, vice president for academic affairs/provost.

Keystone Dining Room staff helped out with the cooking of some very large bones that Children's Learning Center director Karen Payne brought in Tuesday. "What kind of bones are these?" she asked the children.
