Sen. Nick Miller, a Democrat whose 14th senatorial district comprises portions of Lehigh and Northampton counties, visited Penn College Thursday, taking in a variety of instructional areas along with members of his staff, college administrators, and state Sen. Gene Yaw (R-23), who chairs the Penn College Board of Directors, and his staff. Coincidentally, Miller’s campus call overlapped with a visit by Christine M. Martin, president of PPL Electric Utilities, and other PPL employees.

Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Construction Management Association was named Student Chapter of the Year during the Associated Builders and Contractors Convention, held March 13-15 in Orlando, Florida. The ABC Student Chapter of the Year award recognizes an outstanding chapter for its accomplishments in programming, community service, communications/public relations, and interaction with its sponsoring ABC Chapter.

For the second consecutive year, Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs is supporting a Pennsylvania College of Technology summer camp that introduces high school students to rewarding manufacturing careers. Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs, the charitable foundation of the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, has provided a $4,000 grant for the college to host Tinker Camp, a program for students entering grades 9-12.

Assa Abloy recently brought its mobile showroom to campus, providing an up-close look at its products to students in architecture, construction management and building construction majors. Each day, billions of people use the company’s technology when they walk through automatic doors, stay in a hotel or go through passport control.

A generous gift from Jersey Shore State Bank will once again benefit a program that enables high school students to take courses for college credit through Pennsylvania College of Technology. The bank provided a $5,000 gift through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program to Penn College Dual Enrollment, which allows academically qualified high school and career and technology center students to take Penn College courses tuition-free during their regular school day.

Work continues at Penn College’s Heavy Construction Equipment Operations Site in advance of Baja SAE Williamsport. Some independent-study students and members of the Service Technicians & Operators’ Association have been busy at the Brady Township location, working on essential elements for the competition, scheduled for May 16-19.

Celebrating the positive impact being made in people’s lives, an open house was held Wednesday at Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Clean Energy Center site in Harrisburg. The center is equipping individuals with the skills necessary to weatherize the homes of others, thus reducing energy bills, while at the same time, addressing health and safety issues such as mold, lead paint and carbon monoxide. It is an undertaking with immeasurable benefits for communities.

Laura A. Snyder, of Harrisburg, a landscape/plant production technology student at Pennsylvania College of Technology, was awarded a $4,500 Pennsylvania Landscape & Nursery Association Foundation Scholarship. Snyder received her award at the PLNA 120th Anniversary Celebration & Education Summit, held recently at Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square.

Pennsylvania College of Technology has been recognized as a U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship Program Sponsor. The college’s advanced manufacturing apprenticeships are already registered through the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry; the federal designation provides an additional and elevated status. Apprenticeships help companies train existing workers to fill skills gaps and are a powerful tool for growing the American economy.

A manufacturer of fiber optic and copper network cabling has endowed a scholarship at Pennsylvania College of Technology. Leviton recently presented the college with a $25,000 gift to establish the scholarship. The donation places the company – a Corporate Tomorrow Maker – in the Ambassadors Society ($25,000-$49,999) on the college’s Donor Wall.
