Pennsylvania College of Technology presented Distinguished Staff and Part-Time Teaching Excellence Awards on Thursday, while also recognizing new members of the college's Quarter-Century Club and recent retirees. The Distinguished Staff Awards honor the contributions and commitment of Penn College's employees, who are nominated by their co-workers.

(The following is drawn from remarks by Davie Jane Gilmour, Pennsylvania College of Technology president, during a May 14 all-college meeting to close the 2008-09 academic year.) It is fitting that we end each academic year by honoring students, faculty, and staff who distinguished themselves through their accomplishments.

John W. Miller, a longtime member of the School of Business and Computer Technologies' information technology faculty until his retirement in 2005, died Tuesday, May 12, following a brief illness. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1407 Allegheny St., Jersey Shore.

An associate professor of collision repair at Pennsylvania College of Technology co-authored the textbook, "Collision Repair and Refinishing: A Foundation Course for Technicians," which recently was published by Cengage/Delmar Learning. Alfred M. Thomas II collaborated with Michael Jund, an instructor at Eastern Iowa Community College.

A faculty member in Pennsylvania College of Technology's School of Construction and Design Technologies gave a presentation during the recent 2009 PA Home Energy Conference at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel in State College. Richard C.

A management professor and head of the business administration department at Pennsylvania College of Technology recently was honored for his tenure on the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education Board of Commissioners. The citation for Terry A.

Two articles written by William J. Astore, associate professor of history at Pennsylvania College of Technology, were published recently in a newspaper and a print journal. The Dallas Morning News printed "Aboard the USS Ameriprise," Astore's look at U.S. military missions overseas through the lens of "Star Trek," as a full-page feature essay in its April 12 edition.

The Gallery at Penn College, on the third floor of Pennsylvania College of Technology's Madigan Library, will host an employee exhibition May 14-June 30. More than 25 Penn College faculty and staff members submitted more than 50 original works of art for the exhibit. The works include paintings, photographs, wood, ceramics, mixed media, fiber and metal.

One Book, Every Young Child Pennsylvania College of Technology's Children's Learning Center recently participated in the fourth annual Pennsylvania "One Book, Every Young Child" initiative by inviting special guest readers to share this year's selected book, "If You Were a Penguin," by Wendell and Florence Minor.

Penn College's manager of cash and investments recently attended the third HUG (Higher One User Group) National Conference in New Haven, Conn., bringing back a second-place advertisement/communications award for its "PCT OneCard Tip of the Week" in the Stall Wall Weekly. Eric D.
