Pennsylvania College of Technology has presented student achievement awards to its December 2013 graduates. The award winners, their hometowns and academic majors are: President's Award, presented for leadership and service to the college: Eric Jay Palanko, Latrobe, legal assistant/paralegal studies.

U.S. Army Capt. Scott M. Frederick, who earned a bachelor’s degree in welding and fabrication engineering technology from Pennsylvania College of Technology in 2004, was presented with an Alumni Achievement Award at the college’s December commencement ceremony.

Pennsylvania College of Technology will host two certification exams for the National Strength and Conditioning Association in 2014. Exams for those seeking Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist or NSCA-Certified Personal Trainer credentials are scheduled Saturday, April 12. Registration deadline is Feb. 14. Registrations received by Jan. 31 receive a discount.

Nine Pennsylvania College of Technology students in instructor Carl J. Bower Jr.’s Insects and Diseases of Ornamental Plants course passed the Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator Certification exam offered Nov. 25 on campus.

Enthralled youngsters greet the return of a yuletide favorite. In what has become a holiday tradition, Patrick M. Breen, a first-shift General Services employee, set up his train in the Dunham Children’s Learning Center this month. The children love visiting it with their classmates and taking their families to visit it as they leave each day.

A chocolate house made by Milton resident Ching Chan received the Chef Eugene Mattucci Best of Show Award in the annual Food Show at Pennsylvania College of Technology. Chan is a student in the college’s baking and pastry arts major.

Pennsylvania College of Technology has expanded the size and technical capacity of its building automation lab, thanks in part to the support of Honeywell and Ecosave Automation Inc. Both companies donated equipment and supportive software for the lab, which provides invaluable hands-on training for students enrolled in the college’s building automation technology bachelor-degree major.

The first Pennsylvania Farm Show was held in 1917, a few years after adult education began at what is now Pennsylvania College of Technology. In January, as the college begins a celebration that will last throughout its 2014 centennial year, those two homegrown successes will again converge in Harrisburg.
