Jeremiah C. Gee, assessment coordinator for Pennsylvania College of Technology's School of Integrated Studies, recently offered a presentation at the Network for Academic Renewal Conference hosted by the Association of American Colleges and Universities in Baltimore. The conference focused on general education and was attended by leaders in higher education from across the nation.
Pennsylvania College of Technology received a grant to continue as a project-team member in establishing the National Center of Excellence in Welding Education and Training (Weld-Ed). Penn College is one of eight regional partners for the National Science Foundation project, which began in 2007 and is led by Lorain County (Ohio) Community College.
On April 4, Pennsylvania College of Technology will host a session for girls in seventh and eighth grades to encourage their continued interest in science and math. The college's SMART Girls (Science and Math Applications in Real-World Technologies) project was developed to counter the alarming tendency of girls to shy away from math and sciences as they enter adolescence.
The Children's Learning Center took a Spring Break field trip to the Field House on Tuesday. (Lisa J. Worth, athletic assistant at the facility, is a parent of two young boys at the facility.) The children were able to try their hand at basketball and soccer, and also watched demolition work at the Parkes Automotive Technology Center – part of Penn College's ongoing Stage X building program.
The Gallery at Penn College, on the third floor of Pennsylvania College of Technology's Madigan Library, will host "Transcendence," a collection of photographs by Nick Johnson, from March 17-April 9. Working exclusively with a large-format camera, Johnson's photographs portray manipulated rock and flagstones that resemble abstract landscapes.
Two Penn College men's basketball players have been named to the 2009 Penn State University Athletic Conference All-Conference Team. Leroy Joiner, a freshman guard from Williamsport, and Craig Flint, a senior guard from Port Allegany, were honored by the conference Monday. Joiner, an early childhood education major, led the team in scoring this season with 492 points.
A Pennsylvania College of Technology enrollee shared top honors with his Jersey Shore Area High School teammate in the recent Pennsylvania Automotive Association Foundation-sponsored competition in Harrisburg.

Judging for the CalJava International Wedding Cake Competition was held Thursday morning in the PDC. Ten intricate cakes designed for the competition by students in an advanced cake decorating class were displayed the following day, attracting cash votes to determine the People's Choice Award. The funds raised through voting were given to the YWCA's Liberty House.
