One of the mid-Atlantic’s largest providers of construction and maintenance services recently honored its retiring president by endowing a scholarship in his name at Pennsylvania College of Technology.
Remco Inc., headquartered in Mechanicsburg, established the $25,000 Edward Mattos Remco Inc. Scholarship at Penn College to surprise president Ed Mattos on his last day at work, after 45 years of service to the company.

“Ed spent his career pushing people to do things the right way. He believed in hard work, accountability, paying attention to the details, and most importantly, taking care of the customer,” said Jai Hoover, Mattos’ successor. “Rather than simply saying ‘thank you for 45 years,’ we wanted to create something lasting. In many ways, the scholarship is the most fitting tribute we could give him because it turns his lifetime of mentorship into future opportunity.”
Preference for the scholarship will be given to full-time students who are seeking an associate degree in electrical technology or heating, ventilation & air conditioning technology and are either employed by Remco or an immediate family member of a Remco employee.
The employee-owned company provides refrigeration, electrical, mechanical, HVAC, food service, plumbing and building services to supermarkets, convenience stores, restaurants and other commercial businesses. Remco is part of the Penn College Corporate Tomorrow Maker program.
“When we thought about where this scholarship could make the most meaningful impact, Penn College was the natural choice because it aligns directly with Ed’s lifelong commitment to mentorship, craftsmanship and developing talent,” Hoover said. “Choosing Penn College was about connecting Ed’s legacy to the future of this industry so his name continues to influence the kind of professionals who will lead it next.”
Mattos was thrilled with the scholarship.
“It’s such a special honor and privilege to have Remco Inc. sponsor a scholarship in my name to commemorate my 45-year career,” he said. “Remco has always made education and training an integral part of its business model, and Pennsylvania College of Technology has been a long-time partner with Remco. With this scholarship, that partnership can continue for many years to come and open educational opportunities for students.”
“We are very grateful that Remco leadership decided to honor Ed Mattos by endowing a scholarship at Penn College,” said Justin W. Beishline, corporate relations officer. “The generosity of the company will impact the lives of students for generations, helping them to obtain a transformative education leading to leadership roles in vital industries.”
