Seventeen members of Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Emergency Management Club spent time in New York City in early December to explore the city’s history of emergency management. William A. Schlosser, instructor of emergency management and homeland security, accompanied the group.

Planned and executed entirely by the students, the trip included a tour of the United Nations General Assembly Headquarters, where they learned about the projects of the United Nations and its various components, including the Security Council. The group also visited the New York City Emergency Management Agency, where students were briefed about the facility’s operations and what it takes to be a member of the organization, and toured the Emergency Operations Center headquarters.

Students stayed overnight in New Jersey before returning to the city the following day to visit the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.

“Being exposed to how international and large city emergency management and homeland security operates is essential for our graduates to be successful in the field,” Schlosser said. “There is nothing that can substitute (for) actually going to the places where these organizations work and talking with the people who work there currently in understanding our field.”
