Spotlight on Sports: Wrestling outscores Penn State Altoona

Last week in review: In another light week due to fall semester finals, only the men’s wrestling and basketball teams saw action.

WRESTLING
Last week’s highlights: The Wildcats got a technical fall from Harris Keares, of York, at 125 pounds, and pins by Dan Clark, of North Potomac, Maryland, at 165, and Gavin Gomes, of Denville, New Jersey, along with seven Penn State Altoona forfeits, in Thursday’s Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opener. The 59-0 score matched their largest margin of victory during the NCAA era (since 2014), which came against Hiram College during the 2023-24 season.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
Last week’s highlights: Landon Reeder, of Montoursville, scored 13 points, while Peyton Murphy, of Gallipolis, Ohio, and Jay Henry, of Warminster, both tallied 12 in Saturday’s loss at Alfred University.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Last week’s highlights: In wins a week ago over Penn State Abington on Dec. 3 and Penn State Schuylkill on Dec. 6, Gigi Parlante, of Williamsport, averaged 21 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists to earn her second straight United East Conference Offensive Player of the Week honor as the Wildcats improved to a program-best 9-1 season start.

UNITED EAST CONFERENCE
Through the fall season, Penn College was sixth among 14 United East Conference schools in the Presidents’ Cup standings with 8.90 points. St. Mary’s (Md.) College is in the lead with 13.42 points, followed by Penn State Harrisburg 11.42, Penn State Abington 9.63, Penn State Berks 9.25, Notre Dame (Md.) University 9.17, Penn College, Lancaster Bible College 8.42, Cairn University 7.00, Gallaudet University 6.00, Wilson College 4.63, Cedar Crest College 3.50, Penn State Brandywine 3.30, Valley Forge University 3.30, and Keystone College 2.33.

Last year, the college finished third in the final standings, which recognizes the athletic achievements of its members. The winner is determined by a scoring system that rewards success during both regular-season and postseason competition.
