Spotlight on Sports: Basketball teams split

Last week in review: The basketball teams split after stepping into United East Conference action for the first time this season, and two wins by the women’s team continued its best start in program history at 9-1, eclipsing the 8-1 start of the 1998-99 team.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Last week’s highlights: A three-point advantage in the fourth quarter lifted the Wildcats past Penn State Abington in its UEC opener on Wednesday. Breana Valentine, of Fairfield, led the offense with 18 points; Gigi Parlante, of Williamsport, scored 17; and Kayla Herzer, of Brick, New Jersey, hauled down 11 rebounds. The win snapped a four-game losing streak against Abington.

Hosting Penn State Schuylkill on Saturday, Parlante scored 26 points with 10 rebounds, while Mia Patterson, of Loyalsock Township, and RaeAnna Andreas, of Berwick, each added 13 points as the team improved to 9-1 with its fourth straight victory. In 1998-99, according to then-coach Ron Kodish, his Wildcat team started 6-0 before losing for the first time in its seventh game, then winning two more before its second loss in its 10th game.

Also, Parlante was named the UEC Offensive Player of the Week for her double-double, 29 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and two assists in a game against Penn State Berks on Nov. 25.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
Last week’s highlights: Against Penn State Abington on Wednesday, Ethan Roman, of Bethlehem, scored 14 points; Octavio Alexander, of Dallas, Texas, tallied 12; and Peyton Murphy, of Gallopolis, Ohio, added 10 points in the conference-opening loss that ended a four-game win streak against Abington.

On Friday at Elmira College, Josh Shepherd, of Breinigsville, led the offense with 15 points, while Landon Reeder, of Montoursville, and Jay Henry, of Warminster, each scored 10 points in a one-point overtime loss. In the OT, the Wildcats led by as many as four points before Elmira tied at 92 and opened a four-point lead of its own. Shepherd then drilled a 3-pointer with four seconds remaining to end the scoring.

WRESTLING
Last week’s highlights: Carter Davis, of York, finished fourth in the 165-pound weight class, going 6-1, including one fall and two wins by technical fall on the day before taking a medical forfeit in his last bout as the York College New Standard Invitational wrapped up on Saturday. Also for the Wildcats, TJ Martin, of Honesdale, was 3-2 with a fall and two technical falls at 149; Jason Petroski, of Randolph, New Jersey, was 3-2 with two falls at 174; Keenan Ray, of Bethlehem, was 2-2 with a fall and technical fall at 141; David M’Balla, of Easton, was 2-2 at 157; Gavin Gomes, of Denville, New Jersey, was 2-2 at 174; and Lincoln Archibald, of Bristol, Connecticut, was 2-2 with two falls at 174.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Named to the United Soccer Coaches Division III All-Region IV third team on Tuesday were senior forward Sara Darlington, of West Chester; sophomore defender Ashley Gordon, of Pottstown; and freshman forward Ella Garman, of Boiling Springs.
