A Pennsylvania College of Technology Construction/Design Technologies truck sits in front of the Scheebeli Earth Science Center while masonry students work at the building's entrance.

A student crew works to replace the bottom portion of timber posts at the Schneebeli Earth Science Center with block, which will later be covered in stone.

Students in the Masonry Principles class, taught by Scott A. Bierly, instructor of building construction technology, recently applied their hands-on skills at the college’s Schneebeli Earth Science Center.

Two sections of the class spent time at the campus – near Montgomery – to replace the bottom portion of two timber columns at the entrance of the center’s main building. The wood had begun to rot, so General Services staff stabilized the structure and cut several feet off the timbers in preparation for the students’ work. In mid-October, the masonry classes laid chimney blocks to form the new bases.

Bierly plans to return with next semester’s Masonry Principles classes to install decorative stonework over the blocks.
