ATHS north entrance receiving makeover

Friday, May 30, 2025

The north exterior of the Breuder Advanced Technology & Health Sciences Center is undergoing a makeover this summer. Contractors – with assistance from General Services – are updating the veteran’s tribute area by removing the broken veterans’ fountain and replacing the patio that is in need of repair.

“The fountain is beyond repair, is routinely off, and has been creating other challenges due to obsolete parts and failing waterlines. Therefore, the fountain will be replaced with a special tribute to our veterans within the patio," said Timothy O. Rissel, executive director of General Services.

Benjamin R. Thomas, director of construction and planning, cited several reasons for the area improvements. Failing underground piping and lack of replacement parts have made the fountain inoperable. As for the patio, he said the concrete inlay and outer concrete slabs have deteriorated due to salting over the winter months. Also, the planter lighting no longer works, and some of the brick facing of the planters has started to flake off. The planters were installed when the building was constructed in 1986. The area is heavily used, it was becoming unsafe and is in need of improvement.

“We are updating a space that will pay tribute to our veterans and better serve our campus community, including new stairs, planting areas and wall lighting,” Thomas explained.

Construction is expected to be completed by the beginning of the Fall 2025 Semester.
