The national FATE conference is a biennial event that brings together art and design educators from across the U.S. to share research, best practices and new ideas in the field of art and design education.
FATE is an educational association dedicated to the promotion of excellence in the development and teaching of college-level foundation courses in studio and art history. While the organization uses FATE as its official name, the letters stand for “Foundations in Art: Theory and Education.”
The duo’s presentation included material from their co-authored publication, “Visual Literacy Workbook for Graphic Design and Fine Art Students,” published by Oxford University Press.
Visual literacy is a vital part of pedagogical, artistic and research practices of various kinds. For over five decades, the concept of visual literacy has been used across disciplines, most prominently in education, art, museum studies, information design, photography and new literacies research.
In addition to presenting their research at the conference, Flynn and Moyer met with 2011 Penn College graphic design alumna Beth A. Meisenhelder, director of UI/UX (user interface design/user experience design) at Raxia in Denver.
Flynn holds a Master of Fine Arts from Indiana State University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Columbus College of Art & Design.
Moyer received a Master of Fine Arts from Maryland Institute College of Art and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Delaware.
