Penn College Spotlight on Sports: Fall teams begin conference play

Penn College's fall athletics teams turned the page on September and are in full United East Conference mode for the final month of their respective seasons.

Men's and women's soccer both started the conference schedule strong with two victories each. Women's volleyball faced tough competition against Penn State Harrisburg and Gallaudet, along with a nonconference match against Lebanon Valley, while the men's golf team hosted its home meet Monday and Tuesday at the Williamsport Country Club.

On the horizon: Men's golf kicks off the week at the Red Flash Invitational on Monday and Tuesday and is in action Thursday for one round of the United East Fall Preview at Belle Springs. Men's and women's cross country host Lycoming College for a meet at the Earth Science Center on Thursday evening. Men's tennis hosts Penn State Altoona for its final fall home match Friday, and women's soccer hosts St. Mary's College (Md.) on Saturday at 1 p.m., marking all of the home matches around campus this week.

Women's volleyball heads to Penn State Schuylkill on Thursday and Penn State Brandywine on Saturday, while men's soccer is also on the road at Penn State Harrisburg and Keystone on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
 

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Penn College remained undefeated in United East contests with a 4-2 win at Penn State Berks on Tuesday and a 4-0 shutout on Senior Day against Wilson on Saturday. Megan Kurian led the offense with four goals across both games. Kurian now has 95 career points with 37 goals and 21 assists.

Lily Persing also finished Tuesday's game with four points, scoring once and dishing out two assists. Camryn Lobb scored the opening goal in the third minute to help the Wildcats defeat the Nittany Lions for the first time in the NCAA era.

Against the Phoenix, Kurian scored twice, while Lobb and Hailey Sheetz also found the back of the net. Ginny Yost played all 90 minutes in goal and was kept clean as her defense did not allow a shot in the shutout victory.

MEN'S SOCCER

The men's soccer team also remained perfect in United East competition with a 3-1 victory over Penn State Berks on Tuesday and a 2-0 shutout against Lancaster Bible on Saturday. Robert Antonini paced the offense with two game-winning goals in both matches. Against Berks, Scott Goldfeder scored the opening goal on a penalty kick in the 25th minute, and Antonini netted the second goal of the match with three seconds left in the first half. Miller Kahmar added a second-half insurance goal in the 72nd minute. Penn College outshot Penn State Berks, 26-5 (8-2 on goal), in the win.

Against the Chargers on Saturday, Antonini scored the opening goal in the 34th minute, and Andrew Mathis added a goal in the 57th minute, while Justin Crismale collected five saves in the shutout victory.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Penn College suffered three 3-0 final scores against Penn State Harrisburg, Gallaudet and Lebanon Valley. The Wildcats dropped set scores of 25-15, 25-16 and 25-5 to the Nittany Lions on Wednesday evening. The Wildcats scored 16 kills, while Penn State Harrisburg totaled 35 kills and a .269 hitting percentage. Lilly Stockum paced the offense with nine kills, while Eleana Falkner scored one ace and Callie Riddle posted a team-high 14 digs.

On Saturday, hosting the Bison and Dutchmen in a tri-match, the Wildcats finished with set scores of 25-20, 25-14 and 25-20 in the conference clash against Gallaudet. Stockum scored 14 kills and hit .333, while Peyton Maass also scored 10 kills and a team-best .350 percentage. Taryn Smith dished out 14 assists, and Riddle led the defense with 13 digs. Against Lebanon Valley, Penn College dropped scores of 25-21, 25-14 and 25-8. Riddle set a new season high with 20 digs.

MEN'S TENNIS

The Wildcats suffered their first defeat of the fall season, falling to Susquehanna, 7-0, on Saturday. Penn College played in three singles matches that forced a tiebreaker set, with Matt Williams coming the closest to a singles win at No. 3 by scores of 5-7, 6-4, 0-1 (6-11 TB). Avery Hawk and Valentino Barillaro also forced tiebreaker sets at No. 4 and No. 5 singles.

The Wildcats dropped two decisions on back-to-back days, falling 7-0 at Penn State Altoona on Friday and 6-1 against Susquehanna on Saturday. Faith Murray was the lone point scorer on the week with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles against the River Hawks.

MEN'S GOLF

Penn College finished 17th out of 18 teams at the talent-loaded Northeast Elite tournament, held at the Williamsport Country Club on Sunday and Monday. Brett Keenan paced the Wildcats in the tournament, finishing tied for 69th at 16-over 158 after carding rounds of 80 and 78. Carter Girton finished tied for 71st at 19-over 159 after rounds of 80 and 79. Chase Dillman and Bryce Carey tied for 77th at 18-over 160. Dillman carded rounds of 82 and 78. Carey shaved 16 strokes off his first-round score of 88 to shoot 72 on day two. Logan Gawlinski tied for 83rd at 20-over 162 after rounds of 76 and 86.
