Pennsylvania College of Technology automation and electronics students are benefiting from Canary Labs’ ongoing support for the institution.

The software development company has donated 75 licenses of its latest Historian time-series database for use by students seeking a bachelor’s degree in either automation engineering technology or electronics & computer engineering technology. The company – dedicated to providing engineers with easy-to-use tools – has supported the college with software donations since 2022.

“Canary’s Historian is software that collects and stores massive amounts of data. The type of data is called time-series data. The data has a time stamp indicating the time and date of collection. Some applications used in industrial automation produce millions of data points per second. That’s why a separate system like Historian is needed to collect this data,” explained Jeff L. Rankinen, associate professor of electronics and computer engineering technology. “The Canary system also helps organizations contextualize, visualize and analyze this data to support data-driven operations and digital transformation initiatives.”

Approximately 40 students have access to the software throughout the academic year.

“Students need exposure to large enterprise-level systems to have the skills needed by industry,” Rankinen said. “The Canary Historian software is an industry standard for large time-series data collection needs. An understanding of it makes our automation students more valuable to industry.”

A Penn College Corporate Tomorrow Maker, Canary Labs is a member of the Millionaires Society ($1,000,000+) on the college’s Donor Wall.

“Canary is proud to be a Pennsylvania-based company and values opportunities to support the initiatives of Penn College and its School of Engineering Technologies. By donating Canary licenses, we hope to give students hands-on exposure to real-world industrial data use cases and software, helping prepare the next generation of engineers and industry professionals,” said Kyle Kensinger, director of partner programs and strategic accounts for Canary Labs.

“We are grateful for the continued generous support of Canary Labs,” said Justin W. Beishline, corporate relations officer. “The company’s ongoing commitment enriches the real-world nature of a Penn College education for our automation and electronics students, making them tremendous assets to industry.”
