Friday, April 24, 2026

In honor of Arbor Day – officially observed on April 24 – students in forestry and landscape/plant production majors planted trees at the Schneebeli Earth Science Center and in Williamsport. And Earth Day – observed internationally each year on April 22 – was celebrated by Earth Science Center programs by planting trees and moving earth.

Arbor Day

At the Earth Science Center, members of the Penn College Horticulture Club and students in the Sustainable Horticulture class planted nearly 60 bare-root trees over the course of two days.

For the 11th year, Penn College has received Tree Campus Higher Education designation, which was established in 2008 to foster a tradition of excellence and recognize green colleges and universities. Standards for recognition include having a campus tree advisory committee, a campus tree care plan and dedicated annual expenditures; observance of Arbor Day; and the creation of a service-learning project aimed at engaging the student body. The Tree Campus program aims to support colleges and universities in growing their community forests and in educating the next generation on the importance of caring for the environment.

In Williamsport, Michael A. Dincher’s Botany class planted trees to help the Williamsport Streets and Parks Department enhance the scenery on Woodland Avenue, in the city’s east end.

According to the Arbor Day Foundation, trees clean our air and water, provide habitat for wildlife, connect communities and support health and well-being.

The Service Technicians & Operators Association held a Movin’ Earth for Earth Day event at the college’s Heavy Equipment Operations Site, allowing participants to run an excavator and challenge themselves to stack tires or gently pick up and place an egg.
