Winners were named in Pennsylvania College of Technology’s annual cake competition, sponsored by CalJava International. First place among the 11 competitors was awarded to Ching Chan, a first-year student in the college’s baking and pastry arts major, for a cake that featured intricate hand piping.

Thirty-nine Pennsylvania College of Technology students, accompanied by two instructors, will travel to Louisville, Ky., to help prepare food for the thousands who will attend the 139th running of the storied Kentucky Derby.

A scholarship fund that will eventually meet the emergency needs of eligible Pennsylvania College of Technology students is more than halfway to endowment, thanks to a recent initiative by employees in two campus offices. “Dress Down February,” born of a committee of co-workers in the Financial Aid and Admissions offices, raised $4,070 for the Mary Beth Saar Memorial Scholarship.

Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Athletics program has been approved for exploratory membership in Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, college officials announced Tuesday. Penn College’s one-year NCAA Division III exploratory status officially begins Sept. 1. It will last throughout the 2013-14 academic year.
