As the health care industry increasingly seeks to elevate clinical professionals to administrative positions, Pennsylvania College of Technology is launching a bachelor’s degree in healthcare leadership & administration. Designed for individuals who seek advanced roles in their health care fields, the degree is available to those who hold associate degrees in health care disciplines and many who are or will soon be U.S. certified, licensed or registered in a health care profession.

Students in Pennsylvania College of Technology’s surgical technology major are joining hospitals and colleges throughout the country in observing National Surgical Technologists Week, Sept. 17-23. National Surgical Technologists Week has been celebrated since 1984 by the Association of Surgical Technologists to honor those who work in the field.

Pennsylvania College of Technology’s physician assistant program hosted an open house on Sept. 15 to showcase recently completed renovations that promise to provide a true-to-life setting for hands-on education. Throughout the Physician Assistant Center, updates provide equipment and spaces that mirror the scenarios students will encounter in the clinical rotations they complete during their final year of study. New spaces include a Family Medicine Lab, a Women’s Health Lab and an Emergency Medicine Lab.

Pennsylvania College of Technology recently presented a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students to Nayla M. Winder, of Williamsport, who received an associate degree in practical nursing from the college on Aug. 5.

While anxiety is the most prevalent mental health concern, research indicates that nurses do not feel adequately prepared to care for anxious patients. With that fact in mind, Assistant Dean of Nursing & Health Sciences Tanae A. Traister recently researched the use of virtual reality simulation in nursing education to help lessen nursing students’ own anxiety in dealing with anxious patients.

Paramedic students, and their work helping to provide emergency care to spectators at the nearby Little League Baseball World Series, were featured during WNEP’s evening newscasts on Monday.

Helping others to feel comfortable talking about mental health is vitally important to new Pennsylvania College of Technology graduate Tori Siler: because 800,000 people worldwide die by suicide every year (an average of one person every 40 seconds), because most individuals see a medical professional within a month of taking their life, and on the most personal level, because her father took his life in 2015, when Siler was 14 years old.

Two Williamsport-area nonprofits will again support one another during the Little League Baseball World Series, as budding culinary artists and paramedics from Pennsylvania College of Technology gain experience, and Little League players and fans benefit from their skill. The nationally televised series, scheduled Aug. 16-27, draws tens of thousands of spectators each day to the Little League World Series complex in South Williamsport, just a few miles from the Penn College campus.
