Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Construction Management Association was named Student Chapter of the Year during the Associated Builders and Contractors Convention, held March 13-15 in Orlando, Florida. The ABC Student Chapter of the Year award recognizes an outstanding chapter for its accomplishments in programming, community service, communications/public relations, and interaction with its sponsoring ABC Chapter.
Representatives of Keystone Precision Solutions spent a recent day on campus to share their expertise in emerging technologies in the architecture, surveying, construction and engineering industries. Although the team’s unmanned aerial vehicles were “grounded” due to rain, several classes visited the Bardo Gym to experience equipment, including a robotic total station, laser scanner and unmanned aircraft systems.
On March 19, a group of Pennsylvania College of Technology students will host the first Wildcat Forum, a series of six-to-eight-minute talks sharing the theme “What is Success?” The event is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in the Klump Academic Center Auditorium and is open to the community. Three Penn College alumni and two employees are slated to speak.
Penn College’s Wayne R. Sheppard, assistant professor of construction management, and student Noah H. Jumper, of Shippensburg, were quoted in an article published in the March issue of Construction Executive magazine. In a story titled “Generation Yes: Recruiting today’s construction management students,” Sheppard and Jumper, a senior in the construction management major, offered insight to employers looking to hire upcoming construction management graduates.
Two Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. employees visited classes recently in architecture and heating, ventilation & air conditioning engineering technology to introduce students to career paths with the company’s virtual design & construction operations group. That team constructs buildings virtually before they are built physically, explained 2011 construction management alumnus Sean Scully, who is a project manager for Whiting-Turner, and Brandon Hurlburt, a VDC manager for the company.
A few had never flown or been outside of the United States. For some, not even beyond Pennsylvania or any farther south than Virginia. And if any of their good fortunes ever included travel to the Caribbean, that touristy resort experience offered no hint of how revelatory everyday life can be. When they boarded their flight in Philadelphia in June, not even a 16-week preparatory class on their Penn College campus could have adequately prepared them for their imminent awakening in the Dominican Republic.
A day and a half of mentorship and inspiration, as well as a Thursday night banquet to honor the milestone, commemorated the 30th anniversary of Penn College's first bachelor's-degree major: construction management.
