Threatening skies delivered on their radar-green promise of a soggy Monday, but it wasn't enough to scuttle Penn College's proud prelude to the Little League Baseball World Series.

Pennsylvania College of Technology has received an $18,750 grant to support its Lycoming County Prison-to-College Program. The initiative aims to break down initial barriers to education and help individuals on a path to bettering themselves and their communities.

"Frustrating." "Eye-opening." "Informative." Those were a few of the responses following a two-hour "reentry simulation" held Tuesday at Pennsylvania College of Technology. Attended by more than 50 criminal justice professionals, the interactive activity created a month in the life of individuals recently released from prison.

Chris E. Miller, retiring as Penn College Police chief, received official acknowledgement from state lawmakers during a reception in the Thompson Professional Development Center on Wednesday afternoon. Legislative citations were presented by Sen. Gene Yaw, R-23rd, who also chairs the college's board of directors, and by Rep. Michael A. Stender Jr., R-108th, in whose district Miller resides. Also in attendance were Reps. Jamie L. Flick, R-83rd, and Joe Hamm, R-84th.

During the past decade, Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Baja SAE team members have journeyed more than 20,000 miles to test their talent. Next year, they will travel less than 10 from main campus to do that. Penn College will host a Baja SAE competition May 16-19 at its Schneebeli Earth Science Center near Montgomery and Allenwood. Dubbed Baja SAE Williamsport, the international event is expected to attract 80-plus teams and about 800 competitors.

The Community Arts Center is celebrating its 30th year in operation and will soon announce some of the shows comprising the 2023-24 Performance Series.

Maxine Zglinicki needed to complete a senior project. Dr. John H. Bailey wanted a surgical tool redesigned. The recent Pennsylvania College of Technology graduate and local orthopedic surgeon teamed up to meet both objectives. Zglinicki, of Norristown, devoted a chunk of her final semester at the college to redesigning a tensioning device used with a robot for knee replacement surgery.

A "Lunch & Learn" event filled Penn's Inn on Monday afternoon, as employees, students and community members joined in what organizers hope is an annual campus celebration of Juneteenth.

Pennsylvania College of Technology's hands-on role in two community-enhancement projects was cited Wednesday by President Michael J. Reed, who also spoke before the State Transportation Commission on the region's ongoing need for dependable commercial airline service.
