Michelle Mierwald established Sweet Heat Gourmet to help fulfill her passion for fresh, local foods. Sauces, salsas, and other products use ingredients purchased from farmers in Mierwald's area.

Students from Penn College's School of Business & Hospitality were among the judges for Saturday's Grill-Off at the Young Men's Republican Club, which remains strong and active in the community 140 years after its founding. The annual event is just one of several hosted by the club to raise money for charitable organizations, outreach programs and college scholarships.

Thomas C. Heffner has been appointed assistant dean of sciences, humanities and visual communications: programs at Pennsylvania College of Technology. Heffner comes to Penn College from Central Piedmont Community College, Charlotte, N.C., where he was program chair and a faculty member for early childhood education. Women from the campus community are welcome to attend a free self-defense workshop, part of a Penn College student's internship at the James V. Brown Library, to be held from 6:30-8 p.m. Aug. 15-16 in the library's Lowry Theatre. The event was organized by Bethany M. Reppert, an applied human services major from Pottsville, whose internship capstone involves presenting a program for adults.

A paper by a member of Pennsylvania College of Technology’s business administration faculty was accepted for publication in “Selected Papers From the 24th International Conference on College Teaching and Learning.” Gerald D. “Chip” Baumgardner, associate professor of business administration, was among more than 150 faculty presenters at the conference, held in April in Jacksonville, Fla.
