Graphic design alumni recognized in national competition

Pennsylvania College of Technology graphic design alumni captured nine awards in AIGA Baltimore’s 2023 nationwide Flux Student Design Competition.

“This is a huge win for Penn College Graphic Design, especially considering that we were competing against some of the best art and design schools in the country,” said Nicholas L. Stephenson, instructor of graphic design.

The seven alumni who were honored in the Flux competition created their designs during their senior year and graduated in 2023.

Capturing one of the top honors in the nationwide Flux Student Design Competition is Justin R. Guthrie’s “UNOIA Mental Health App” design in the User Experience/User Interface category. Guthrie, of Mifflinburg, graduated in 2023 from Pennsylvania College of Technology’s graphic design major, but his design was created during his senior year.

Justin R. Guthrie, of Mifflinburg, captured one of the 15 top honors in the competition, winning the “Best of Category” designation for the User Experience/User Interface category for his “UNOIA Mental Health App.”

Elise A. Miller, of Lincoln University, won another of the top awards – the “Honorable Mention” in the Packaging category for her “Five Crowns: Monster Edition” design. Miller was also recognized in the Identity category for her “Oak Ridge Cooperative School Branding” design.

Taylor J. Leshock, of Shamokin, also received two honors: in Identity for “Angry Goat Pepper Co. Packaging” and in the Packaging category for “Cloak & Dagger Brewing Co.”

Others recognized in Packaging were: Toni E. Novosel, of Mifflinburg, for “Ice Cream Packaging”; Molly A. Raser, of Birdsboro, for “Far West Fungi Mini Grow Kit”; and Aneesah D. Robinson, of Philadelphia, for “Elixor Energy Drink.”

Alexander G. Geyer, of Montoursville, earned recognition in the Publication category for his “Book Jacket Series.”

The 2023 Flux Student Design Competition received 613 entries, with 268 projects honored by a jury of creative professionals in seven categories: Identity, Packaging, Poster, Publication, Social Impact Design, UX/UI and Video/Motion Graphics.

A reception honoring the Flux winners was held in Baltimore on Feb. 8.

Presented annually by AIGA Baltimore, Flux celebrates the best creative work produced by undergraduate and graduate students from across the country. The competition was established in 2007 by the former chapter, AIGA Blue Ridge.

A professional association of design advocates, AIGA advances design as a professional craft, strategic advantage and vital cultural force.
