Our Storied Journey features oil paintings by Laurie Hoen that weave visual narratives around allegorical animal or bird figures. The works explore social and political challenges shaping contemporary life, asking whether our collective unease around racism, environmental stewardship, violence, and social injustice can be transformed into a tangible image of personal responsibility and participation in change.
Like a compelling book that invites identification with its characters, these paintings encourage viewers to step into an unfolding parable and imagine its ending. They prompt reflection, asking viewers to compare the imagery before them with their own lived experiences. In this way, engagement becomes an act of creation between the artist and viewer, opening space for multiple shared interpretations and encouraging dialogue around the issues that shape our collective journey.
Laurie Hoen came to her studio practice through a varied professional path that included work as a documentary film producer, professional chef, and high school visual arts teacher. She earned a Master of Interdisciplinary Studies in Fine Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University. [She has
lived in Michigan, Oregon, and Texas, and currently resides in Virginia.]
