About the Camp
Do you love the great outdoors? Are you interested in a career that involves nature, design, and creativity? Campers will explore the world of this “green” career that combines art and science. Campers will attend workshops at the College’s Earth Science Center to learn about greenhouse techniques, plant identification & production, floral design, entomology, and more. If you are interested in the dynamic field of horticulture, then this camp is for you!
Grow & Design Horticulture Workshops
Fundamentals of Floral Design
Explore the elements and principles of floral design as well as learn the names and classification of the most commonly used flowers and foliage. Campers will design and create several floral arrangements and get to keep their creations!
Penn College has over 6,500 square feet of greenhouse space! Campers will be introduced to the greenhouse environment, use of greenhouse spaces, and the basic techniques of plant production. They will learn how to sow seeds; transplant, harvest, and prepare cuttings; and the process of a hydroponic food system.
Insects come in all shapes and sizes and not all are dangerous to the plants in our gardens or backyards. Campers will examine common garden insects to get a better understanding of a bug’s role in plant life and how they can be controlled.
Campers will learn what equipment is essential to the landscape/horticulture industry. College-owned equipment includes a backhoe, front-end loader, a Toro Dingo, and hand and power tools. Campers will review safety protocol and get to operate some pieces of equipment.
Plant ID and Landscape Design
What is the first step in designing a landscape? Basic plant knowledge and identification is essential! Campers will learn about common landscape plants and design their own landscape using the College’s up-to-date software.
During an interactive nature walk, explore Penn College’s five-acre arboretum and trail system to learn about the natural communities and ecological features that make up our forests.
