What to Bring/What Not to Bring

You're about to make Penn College your new home. Each living area comes fully furnished. Use this packing list to make sure you've got everything else you need, and leave behind the items that aren't allowed. 

Must Bring Items

  • Bed linens - Twin XL size
    • All mattresses are 36"x80", longer than a standard twin size.
  • Mattress cover - Twin XL
  • Comforter/Quilt/Blanket
  • Pillow
  • Towels and washcloths
  • Personal hygiene items (soap, hair needs, and other toiletries)
  • Basic kitchen items (silverware, can opener, plates, bowls, cups, microwave-proof dishes, dish soap, dish towel, sponge)
  • Tissues, paper towels, and toilet paper (only provided in Dauphin Hall bathrooms)
  • Simple first aid items (bandages, pain reliever, cold medicine, anti-itch cream, etc.)
  • Wastebasket and trash bags
  • Shower curtain
    • The Village - 6'x3'
    • Campus View, Clinton, Delaware, and Juniata - 5.75'x5.75'
    • Lancaster and York - 5.5'x3'
    • These are provided in Dauphin Hall
  • Basic cleaning supplies (bathroom cleaner, multi-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, broom, mop, vacuum)
  • Lamps (if you want an option other than the overhead lighting)
  • High efficiency (HE) laundry detergent and hamper

Optional Items

  • Television - must be a smart TV or some other means to connect to the internet
  • Extension cord with UL-approved circuit breaker
    • Running wires beneath carpeting, duct taping wire to the carpet, or running wires above suspended ceilings is not permitted
  • Posters and/or pictures
  • Houseplants
  • Hangers
  • Personal refrigerator (4.2 cubic feet or less)
    • Note: Residents of Dauphin Hall do not have a common area refrigerator to use
  • Iron/ironing board
  • Electric frying pan
  • Toaster oven
  • Bicycle and bicycle lock
  • Sports equipment (soccer balls, footballs, frisbees)
  • Games
  • Extra storage - beds have approximately 30" of clearance underneath
  • Curtains - all residence hall windows come with window shades

Do Not Bring

  • Fish tanks larger than 5 gallons
  • Space heaters
  • Hot plates with an exposed coil
  • Hanging beds, loft bed frames, and all other hanging furniture
  • Couches, chairs, futons, or mattresses (not permitted unless the student can provide manufacturer’s certification that the furniture meets California Technical Bulletin 133 for fire retardancy of upholstered furniture or 16 CRF Part 1633 federal flammability standard of mattresses.)
  • Fog machines
  • Exterior antennas
  • Outdoor clotheslines
  • Darts/dartboards
  • Extension cords without a UL-approved circuit breaker
  • Candles
  • Incense
  • Lava lamps
  • Halogen lights
  • LED strip, tape, or ribbon lights
  • Holiday string and rope lights that are not UL-approved
  • Electronic bikes, hover boards, one wheels, battery-operated scooters, and other motorized personal transportation devices should not be used, charged, or stored in College housing, except for those approved for use through the Disability & Access Resources Office. 
  • Pool, ping pong, or air hockey tables
  • Plug-in air fresheners, including electric wax melts
  • Personal air conditioner units
  • Chlorinated, dyed, or fragranced water treatment in toilet tanks
  • Wireless or Ethernet routers
  • Water filters placed on faucets
  • Removing and replacing showerheads
  • Chest freezers
  • Refrigerators over 4.2 cubic feet
  • Portable dishwashers
  • Convection ovens
  • Upright/top loading toasters
  • Water-filled furniture
  • Personal microwaves in Dauphin Hall
  • Drum sets
  • Street signs
  • Hookah pipes
  • Cigarettes that smell like marijuana
  • Stickers to put on doors or other surfaces within the apartment (memo boards are permitted)
  • Gas, grills, propane, charcoal, lighter fluid stored outside of a lighter, kerosene, nitrous oxide, lamp oil, motor oil (including gas-powered engines)
  • Stickers and tape to put on apartment exterior doors
  • Personal locks for on bedroom door handles
  • Car tires
  • Remote-controlled cars with gas-powered engines
