The competition, hosted by George Mason University School of Art, is open to undergraduate students at accredited colleges and universities and provides an opportunity to solve real-world communication design problems.
The 264 entries, which included projects in branding, packaging, infographics, editorial design and exhibition design, were judged on concept, design and execution.
“One of the things that makes this competition both unique and highly valuable is that it provides project abstracts so that students compete against each other using the same design projects and parameters,” said Nicholas L. Stephenson, assistant professor of graphic design and co-department head. “In this case, students entered the branding category, for which they had to create a logo and a system of four coffee bag labels for Hypergoat Coffee Roasters.”
Unlike most design competitions, which allow students to enter work from any project, The Real Show offers an apples-to-apples comparison among competitors, Stephenson added.
“Competing against other schools in The Real Show is more than a test of design,” he said. “It’s an opportunity for students to challenge themselves, showcase their creativity and take pride in what they can accomplish. We are always honored to see our students excel.”
