The technology is used heavily throughout the program, which teaches students in-demand skills such as installing, servicing and repairing diesel power generators. Students also refine the practical skills needed to work with electrical machinery, electric and electronic machine control devices, and other electronic equipment.
“Donations like this are important because they provide our students and instructors with access to a variety of modern equipment,” said John A. Pecchia, assistant dean of diesel technology and natural resources. “There are a variety of reasons why graduates in the on-site power generation program are in high demand, but the recent boom in data centers has probably been the biggest driver, not just in this region but across the United States.”
Penn College is one of only a few institutions in the nation to offer a degree in on-site power generation, and its curriculum, which is dedicated entirely to power generation, ensures graduates are well-prepared to enter the workforce, Pecchia added.
Industry partnerships help support the college through equipment donations that offer students hands-on training in real-world power generation laboratories equipped with diesel and natural gas generators.
“Curtis Power Solutions has been an exceptional partner that understands both the industry’s demand for skilled power generation technicians and the importance of training students on the equipment they will encounter in their careers,” said Justin W. Beishline, corporate relations officer. “The donated generator and diagnostic software will significantly enhance student learning opportunities. As the program sought newer examples of natural gas engine technology, Curtis Power Solutions stepped forward to meet that need, further strengthening the educational experience for Penn College students.”
