Architecture program celebrates sketch artistry

To kick of the fall semester, the architecture program invited its students to participate in a napkin sketch contest.

Entrants in the contest created six sketches on 5-by-5-inch white napkins: two exteriors, two interiors and two “free for all” sketches. They were invited to use ink, ballpoint pen or any medium they saw fit.

The response was impressive, as captured in photos by Kara A. Demmien, instructor of architecture.

Winners were:

• First Place: Adam B. Smith, of Warrington, fifth-year student, Bachelor of Architecture
• Second Place: Mason L. George, of Schnecksville, third-year student, Bachelor of Architecture
• Third Place: Connor J. Fritz, of Carlisle, third-year student, Bachelor of Architecture
• Honorable Mention: Beckett C. Gilmour, of Williamsport, fourth-year student, Bachelor of Architecture
• Honorable Mention: Josh M. Hoppes, of Pipersville, second-year student, Bachelor of Architecture
• Honorable Mention: Jacob M. Miller, of Mohrsville, fourth-year student, architecture & sustainable design

The students were invited to further submit their sketches to Architectural Record’s annual Cocktail Napkin Sketch Challenge. The Record founded the contest in 2010 to honor the legacy of sketching in architecture.

Penn College offers a five-year Bachelor of Architecture, a four-year Bachelor of Science in architecture & sustainable design, and a two-year Associate of Applied Science in architecture.
