Spotlight on Sports: Four teams taste victory

Last week in review: The golf team continued its excellence in United East Fall Preview play, while the men’s soccer, women’s soccer and women’s volleyball teams all tasted victory, and the last of the CATS Award winners were announced.

On the horizon: The women’s soccer team will put its 36-match regular-season unbeaten streak on the line Tuesday night when it hosts Penn State Harrisburg, the defending United East champion and this year’s favorite to repeat in a preseason poll.

MEN’S GOLF
Last week’s highlights: Gunner Redmond, of Lock Haven, tied for ninth after rounds of 71-74—145 to lead the Wildcats in the Northeast Elite last Sunday and Monday. The Wildcats had rounds of 307-304—611 to end 10th in a 16-team field. Also for Penn College, Brady Handy, of Huntingdon, shot 73-79—152 to tie for 34th, Brett Keenan, of Plymouth Meeting, shot 80-79—159 to tie for 70th, Logan Gawlinski, of Kittanning, shot 83-84—167 to end 83rd and Joel Toburen, of Boyertown, shot 87-91—178 to end 87th.

On Thursday, the Wildcats shot a 308 to win their fourth straight United East Fall Preview, with Redmond claiming individual honors after shooting an even-par 72. Also, Chase Dillman, of Boyertown, tied for second with a 74, Handy tied for ninth with a 78 and Keenan tied for 23rd with an 84.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Last week’s highlights: Sara Darlington, of West Chester, and Ella Garman, of Boiling Springs, each scored three goals, while Sierra Klinger, of Herndon, had four assists and Darlington had two assists, in Wednesday’s romp over Keystone College.

Hosting Notre Dame (Md.) University on Saturday, Darlington had her second hat trick of the week, Klinger had two assists and goalie Morgan Solano, of Shavertown, had three saves while recording the shutout.

MEN’S SOCCER
Last week’s highlights: An own-goal in the second minute, and a goal by Silas Miller, of Mechanicsburg, in the 18th minute, gave the Wildcats everything they would need in Wednesday’s win over Keystone College.

Facing Notre Dame (Md.) University on Saturday, goalkeeper Justin Crismale, of Glen Gardner, New Jersey, made four saves in a draw.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Last week’s highlights: In Thursday’s loss to Penn State Berks, Lilly Stockum, of Dauphin, had 24 kills, Nashalie Vializ, of New Holland, had 25 assists and Kylie Kline, of Coopersburg, had 15 digs.

The Wildcats’ victory over Valley Forge on Friday gave them their first four-win season under coach Kyle Hawk and snapped an 11-match United East losing streak going back to last year. Stockum had eight kills, Vializ had 15 assists, Haylie Thomsen, of High Bridge, New Jersey, had seven service aces, and Kline had 11 digs.

Last week’s highlights: Lauren Peck, of South Williamsport, scored the lone win at No. 1 singles in Friday’s loss to Penn State Altoona.

In Saturday’s loss at Juniata College, posting wins for the Wildcats were Kiera Wene, of Ephrata, at No. 4 singles, and Wene-Faith Murray, of Dillsburg, at No. 2 doubles.
