Spotlight on Sports: Women’s soccer’s streak continues

Last week in review: The women’s soccer team posted its third 2-0 week of the season and extended its regular-season unbeaten streak to 32, while the men’s soccer team went 1-1, the women’s volleyball squad was 1-2, and the women’s tennis team was 0-1.

On the horizon: This Saturday, United East Conference play begins for the men’s and women’s soccer teams and the women’s volleyball team.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Last week’s highlights: Freshman Ella Garman, of Boiling Springs, scored twice, and goalkeeper Taylor Brownback, of Birdsboro, made one save while recording her fifth shutout in Wednesday’s win over Penn State Altoona that put the Wildcats up in the series since 2017, 3-2-2. Hosting La Roche University during Wildcat Weekend on Saturday, Sara Darlington, of West Chester, and Ashley Gordon, of Pottstown, each had a goal and an assist, and goalkeeper Ginny Yost, of Lancaster, got the win.

MEN’S SOCCER
Last week’s highlights: At Pitt-Bradford on Tuesday, Robert Antonini, of Schuylkill Haven, put the Wildcats on the board in the 58th minute, and goalkeeper DJ Blankenship, of Mastic, New York, made it stand up with four saves. On Saturday at Ramapo College, Silas Miller, of Mechanicsburg, had the lone Penn College shot on goal in a shutout loss.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Last week’s highlights: At Wilkes on Tuesday, Lilly Stockum, of Dauphin, had 14 kills and 12 digs, Ellen Banfill, of Mill Hall, notched 25 assists, and Nashalie Vializ, of New Holland, had 16 digs. Hosting a Wildcat Weekend tri-match on Saturday, Penn College split. In its win over Cheyney, Stockum had 12 kills and Haylie Thomsen, of High Bridge, New Jersey, added 11 kills and had 14 digs; Banfill had 18 assists; and Vializ had 12 digs. Against Morrisville, Stockum had 10 kills, Banfill had 12 assists, and Vializ had 13 digs.

Last week’s highlights: Penn College singles winners in Friday’s loss to Lock Haven University were Faith Murray, of Dillsburg, at No. 4 and Kiera Wene, of Ephrata, at No. 5. Murray and Wene also teamed for the Wildcats’ lone doubles win.
