Spotlight on Sports: Women’s tennis preview

Last season: 2-15 overall, 2-7 all United East Conference, 2-6 UE regular season.

Coach: David Straub, third season. Career record: 6-24.

Top returnees: (last season’s overall records) Senior Lauren Peck, of South Williamsport (3-1 singles, 2-2 doubles); junior Faith Murray, of Dillsburg (9-4 singles, 4-9 doubles); senior Kathryn Burnett, of Wellsboro (0-2 singles, 0-2 doubles); sophomore Eliza Welshans, of Jersey Shore (2-4 singles, 1-4 doubles).

Key losses: Ellen Buckley (3-10 singles, 5-8 doubles), Kayla Weinzierl (3-11 singles, 3-11 doubles).

Top newcomers: (all freshmen) Leah Vest, of Muncy; Kiera Wene, of Ephrata; Abigale Rearich, of New Freedom; Jayden Smith of Niagara Falls, New York.

Outlook: Peck moves up from No. 2 singles to No. 1, and Murray goes from No. 3 to No. 2 in a rebuilding season that features four freshmen.

“By the end of the fall season, I want all the freshmen to feel comfortable and that they are a solid, essential part of the team,” Straub said.

Inside the UE: Penn State Harrisburg is the two-time defending champion. Ten teams will compete in the spring season.
