Tom Leeser, head coach for men's and women's cross-country
The sixth edition of WildCast – a podcast by Penn College Athletics – features head men’s and women’s cross-country coach Tom Leeser, who shares his unique journey from high school math teacher and coach to leading a collegiate program.
With host Matt J. Blymier, assistant director of athletics for compliance and athletic communication, Leeser discusses the importance of relationships in coaching.
“We’re hoping to, each season, create a team where those new students coming in feel like they want to be part of something,” Leeser says. “Most of them had friends they grew up with in high school and participated in athletics with in high school, and now they’re coming here and everybody’s new. And so the team gives them a chance to have a little family away from home, so to speak.”
Leeser also talks about the transition to coaching young adults and the development of a championship culture. (In Leeser’s three years at Penn College, the men’s cross-country team has won two United East championships.)
The United East Men’s Cross-Country Coach of the Year also reflects on memorable moments, recruitment strategies and the dynamics of building a cohesive team.
“WildCast ” offers in-depth conversations and gives die-hard fans, proud alumni and passionate parents an insider's look at what it takes to succeed as a Wildcat. New episodes are being released weekly throughout the summer.
