The Dunham Children's Learning Center at Penn College celebrated grandparents on Friday, Sept. 6 (two days earlier than the national holiday), with an activity, snack and outside play.

“Intergenerational programs produce advancement in sensory stimulation, enhancement of self-esteem, increased positive socialization, and intellectual development for both older adults and children, so the CLC welcomes family members to come visit, share a hobby, or read to the children throughout the time spent with us,” explained Linda A. Reichert, CLC director.

Grandparents' Day or National Grandparents' Day is observed on the first Sunday after Labor Day, with this year’s official observance landing on Sunday, Sept. 8. (In 1978, the U.S. Congress passed legislation and a presidential proclamation was signed by Jimmy Carter declaring the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents’ Day.)

In addition to youngsters celebrating their grandparents, a focus of the day is centered on older adults sharing their wisdom with younger generations.

Reichert notes that “families are encouraged to ‘Do Something Grand’ throughout the month of September.”

Below are a few of the photos taken by CLC staff as children and their grandparents enjoyed the celebration.
