With the holiday break behind it, Pennsylvania College of Technology winter sports teams are set to resume their seasons. The men's basketball team hosts NCAA Division III Wilkes University at 7 p.m. Thursday, the women's basketball squad hosts Penn State Fayette at 1 p.m. Saturday and the wrestling team travels to Penn StateBeaver, also at 1 p.m. Saturday.
"Even though we've had some mixed results as far as wins and losses, we've definitely wrestled higher levels of competition and have been somewhat on a learning curve," coach Schuyler Frey said of his 1-2 Wildcats. "The guys wrestled tough and aggressive, and now, as we are getting into the second semester, we'll have a lot more dual meets with the Penn State campus schools and I think we'll be very competitive."
Women's basketball coach Matt Wilt was frank about his team's 1-8 start, calling it "horrible," but he said the second semester should be better.
"We picked up Shelby Straub, a point guard from South Williamsport; Dana Reed from Shikellamy; and Mackenzie Brown, of Lititz, returns. As a team and as a coach, we are excited to get back into things with the additions. Now that we have some bench players we should be a lot better off," said Wilt, in his second season as coach.
"Dana is a very good offensive player. She will take the scoring pressure off Kierstin Steer a lot. She's a very smart player, like Kierstin,"he continued. Steer leads the team in scoring with 167 points and an 18.5 points-per-game average.
"We definitely are going to be a lot more competitive and a lot better off than we were at the beginning of the year," Wilt said. "For as much as we struggled at the beginning, everybody has a very positive attitude and is working hard."
For the Penn College men, also off to a 1-8 start, freshman Scott Fenton, of Dickson City, leads the team in scoring with 97 points and a 10.7 per game average.
