The average lifespan of each flag is about four months, depending on weather conditions, before it requires repair.

Among the most loyal supporters of the flag have been children attending Little Treasures Preschool.

Flags Across America

While Penn College maintains the flag, it does not belong to the college. It was added to the campus as part of a Flags Across America initiative spearheaded by the late Anthony L. DiSalvo, who was looking for a prominent place in the community to display “Old Glory.” A permanent fund at the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania provides for the flag’s perpetual care.

Poem

The flag has its own poem. Local resident May R. Francis was moved to write "Ode to the Flag” in November 2000 (the same month the flag was first unfurled):

From my window
I can see
The symbol of our Liberty.
The (College) flag is flying high
A splash of color in the sky.
It sends a message far and wide
Stirring up our national pride.
When all the morning damps are past,
The flag hangs restless on the mast.
Come, west wind and set it free.
Lift it high so all may see
This symbol of Our Liberty!
