Q&A with Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services

WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT THE INDUSTRY YOU SERVE?

In HR, I like being able to help people find a rewarding career in a field where there are many opportunities for growth. Working in corrections can be exciting when you see offenders accomplishing goals and learning new life and employment skills that will benefit them for life outside the walls.

WHAT DO YOU APPRECIATE MOST ABOUT YOUR COMPANY'S CULTURE/MISSION?

We are committed to supplying offenders and former offenders with the tools necessary to stay out of the criminal justice system.

We believe our own employees are our greatest strength and value the development of talent, skill, and leadership.

HOW DID YOUR COMPANY FIRST CONNECT WITH PENN COLLEGE?

When I started with DPSCS, I saw there was a need to connect with smaller trade schools to fulfill some of the maintenance and dietary positions. I researched the area and found that Penn College offers many of the courses that teach the skills we are looking for in our employees. I reached out and got some information and was able to attend the Fall 2023 Career Fair.

WHY DO YOU BELIEVE PENN COLLEGE IS A SOUND INVESTMENT? WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR RETURN?

As an employer looking for talented recruits to add to their pipeline, I believe Penn College is a great investment. The job fair was well-attended and very organized. Many of the students were dressed for interviews and had resumes and business cards. It was very impressive. This was the first event I attended. Time will tell about our ROI, but I feel Penn College is a great place to build relationships with staff and students for future growth.

WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU VALUE MOST WHEN RECRUITING PENN COLLEGE STUDENTS & ALUMNI?

In our line of work, we are looking for not only quality students/employees who are going to show up and perform their duties to the best of their abilities. We also have an extensive, but necessary background process. So, we need people of moral character who are honest and trustworthy.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU SHARE WITH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO ARE CONSIDERING PENN COLLEGE?

Do your research! From what I have seen in my short time working with Penn College, they are not only going to teach you in classes, but it seems they are giving you tools to help you succeed!
