Q&A with Advanced Disaster Recovery Inc.
WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT THE INDUSTRY YOU SERVE?
Every day is a new opportunity to help people through one of the worst events in their lives. Each project comes with its own challenges - while you learn something from each job that you can bring to the next one, no two projects are the same. Our company is large enough that there are plenty of people to bounce ideas off of, but small enough that it feels like family.
WHAT DO YOU APPRECIATE MOST ABOUT YOUR COMPANY'S CULTURE/MISSION?
We foster a highly collaborative environment where everyone is encouraged to share ideas and perspectives. We value diversity of thought, recognizing that each project is unique. Our team is continuously improving our systems to deliver the best possible service to our customers.
HOW DID YOUR COMPANY FIRST CONNECT WITH PENN COLLEGE?
We had heard about how great Penn College's students were for our industry and reached out to recruit students for internships and full-time positions.
WHY DO YOU BELIEVE PENN COLLEGE IS A SOUND INVESTMENT? WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR RETURN?
We have hired construction management interns who have helped us complete reconstruction projects more efficiently. They are able to shadow and learn from our project managers how to scope and run reconstruction projects, while also taking care of some tasks for the project managers to free up the project managers' time for more complex tasks. Interns complete their time with us ready to come back for full-time, permanent positions with a much smoother on-boarding process than if they had no industry experience. Interns from Penn College have a stronger background for our industry than other schools, so when we can hire from Penn College, we do.
WHAT QUALITITES DO YOU VALUE MOST WHEN RECRUITING PENN COLLEGE STUDENTS AND ALUMNI?
When recruiting Penn College students and alumni, we prioritize candidates who demonstrate:
- Attention to detail – Precision and thoroughness are essential in ensuring quality and minimizing costly mistakes.
- Strong communication skills – The ability to clearly convey ideas, collaborate effectively, and adapt to different stakeholders is key to successful project execution.
- Familiarity with building materials and assemblies – A solid understanding of construction fundamentals allows candidates to contribute meaningfully from day one.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU SHARE WITH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO ARE CONSIDERING PENN COLLEGE?
Look for a school that has a wide variety of majors like Penn College - it is good to choose a school where you can explore different options to find the career that is best for you.
