Presented by Alan R. Neuner, Vice President for Facilities Operations, Geisinger Medical Center.

Throughout time, the evolution of human society has been directly linked to increased energy consumption. In most cases, this consumption involved burning fuel, resulting in air pollutants that negatively impacted the overall health of society. The ever-increasing reliance on energy for comfort, transportation, and manufacturing lasted well into the twentieth century. Since that time, tremendous strides have been made to reduce energy consumption and develop renewable alternatives.

This presentation will explore how organizations and individuals can reduce their energy footprint, thereby reducing expenses while improving air quality and health on a local and national level. Tools and principles discussed will include the “Energy Impact Calculator” and the economics of the “negawatt” as compared to renewable technologies. Lastly, the presentation will include a review of the measures taken by a regional health system that resulted in an EnergyStar rating of “100.”

Discussion will include the resulting cost savings, improvement in air quality, forecasted health improvement, and reduction in direct medical costs in Central Pennsylvania. Join Mr. Neuner in his goal to raise awareness of the role every individual plays in making energy decisions that impact the quality of life and health in our communities. These decisions not only have immediate impact, but can influence community health for generations to come.
