Fundamentals of Energy Efficient Building Operations is a three-day course designed for individuals who are new to commercial building operations and energy management – as well as those in management and supervisory roles. Participants will be introduced to principles for optimizing building efficiency, the interdependencies of key building systems, and the basics of measuring and benchmarking energy performance. This class lays a foundation for individuals to pursue an advanced career pathway focused on energy efficient building operations.

This eight-week course teaches building operators to find practical, low-cost and no-cost efficiency solutions by working with existing systems. Students apply the material that they have learned to five hands-on projects within their commercial facilities. These projects require participants to demonstrate competence in locating building equipment, distribution pathways, and control points; calculating facility energy consumption; critiquing HVAC systems operations; and, sketching the facility’s electrical distribution system.

Building Operator Certification (BOC) Level II prepares building operators to evaluate the operational performance of their buildings with a focus on improving energy efficiency. Operators learn how to collect and analyze building data in order to prepare a building walk-through plan to identify opportunities to improve performance. Participants are required to complete five hands-on projects, including a building walkthrough, and a presentation to their peers highlighting key findings from the walkthrough. This is a seven-week class designed for experienced and trained operations and maintenance personnel employed in a commercial facility.

Candidates who have earned the BOC Level I Training Certificate of Completion are eligible to sit for the BOC certification exam. Upon passing the exam, candidates can begin using Certified Building Operator (CBO) credential.
The Certified Building Operator (CBO) Exam is scheduled through the Northwest Energy Efficiency Council (NEEC), the national BOC administrator, upon successful completion of the course series.

The continuing education of building operators improves their ability to adapt to changing building equipment, practices, and technologies. To remain certified, a building operator must accumulate maintenance points following the date of certification. Five points per year are required to maintain the Level I TCOC or BOC Certification, and 10 points per year are required to maintain the Level II TCOC. Renewal notices are issued annually in January for re-certification. The fee is $75. Please visit BOC’s website for more information on maintaining your certification.
