A record crowd of 134 guests attended Sunday's Grand Pastry Buffet, a scrumptious culmination of course work for baking and pastry arts seniors and an acknowledgement by scholarship recipients of the donors who have smoothed their road to a Penn College diploma.

The School of Hospitality’s second Culinary and Pastry Experience, held Friday in the Thompson Professional Development Center, featured the work of Pennsylvania College of Technology students in five classes – some offering free samples.

Winners were named in Pennsylvania College of Technology’s annual cake competition, sponsored by CalJava International. First place among the 11 competitors was awarded to Ching Chan, a first-year student in the college’s baking and pastry arts major, for a cake that featured intricate hand piping.

Thirty-nine Pennsylvania College of Technology students, accompanied by two instructors, will travel to Louisville, Ky., to help prepare food for the thousands who will attend the 139th running of the storied Kentucky Derby.

Pennsylvania College of Technology students will display their “Spring Wedding”-themed cakes during a competition at the college on March 7. Students spend about 18 hours of class time on their three-tiered cakes. Each is covered with fondant, donated by the competition’s sponsor, CalJava International.

Pennsylvania College of Technology announced the winners for its annual Food Show, a showcase for final projects in advanced culinary arts and baking and pastry arts courses at the college. Taking the Chef Eugene Mattucci Best of Show Award was a two-tier cake decorated by Carrie A. Williams, a baking and pastry arts student from State College.
