Penn College’s peer mentors and fellow students have a new, dedicated space in which to connect – the Hudock Center Peer Hub. The hangout spot gives peer mentors a relaxed venue for conversing with other students and sharing their wisdom on many matters, including building study skills, navigating social situations and getting involved on campus – all ways to boost students’ success.

Timothy S. Turnbach identifies as a “thinker” and “an idea guy.” The Pennsylvania College of Technology welding instructor validated that self-assessment by conceiving and executing an artistic idea to benefit the Pennsylvania State Education Association. With the assistance of two students and a fellow instructor, Turnbach crafted the PSEA crest on 304 stainless steel.

Penn College hosted more than 350 students on campus during the semester’s first two Dual Enrollment Student Visit Days. The students – who are taking Penn College classes at their high school or career and technical education center – got a look at the labs where their on-campus counterparts study. “I love this place already,” said a York County School of Technology student touring the college’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning labs.

Known for its off-road prowess, the Land Rover is considered by auto enthusiasts to symbolize adventure and resilience. The same can be said of Sarah E. Crabtree. Appropriately, the Pennsylvania College of Technology student is capping her educational odyssey by restoring a classic version of the vehicle.

Raising awareness and encouraging campus community members to register as organ donors is at the heart of the “Gift of Life College Challenge,” a project being pursued on the Penn College campus through April 28. Penn College nursing students, Wellness Committee and other partners kicked off the initiative by distributing small bags of Hershey’s Kisses and organ donor information

“Speed Date Your Career,” held recently in the Center for Career Design, gave students the opportunity to engage with Penn College Corporate Tomorrow Makers for networking practice, recruitment opportunities, raffle prizes and refreshments.

Penn College Athletics recently hosted its 10th National Girls & Women in Sports Day clinic. Over 60 young participants signed up for this year’s event and had the opportunity to participate in five of the college’s women’s sports: basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball.

Two residential construction textbooks authored by a Pennsylvania College of Technology faculty member were published recently by The Goodheart-Wilcox Co. Inc. Jack Jones, associate professor of building construction technology, wrote a new textbook: “Principles of Residential Construction: Essential Skills and Practices,” and authored the 14th edition of “Modern Carpentry.”

Over 65 Penn College students engaged with 16 employers at the Human Services & Restorative Justice Internship and Job Expo. “Engaging with employers early and often helps students gain a clearer understanding of career possibilities and build meaningful professional connections," said Elizabeth E. Winder, associate professor of human services & restorative justice.

Penn College’s Fitness Center held a Student Member Appreciation Day. “We wanted to show our appreciation to students who regularly use the Fitness Center by rewarding them with some goodies,” said Gayle M. Kielwein, coordinator of student engagement operations. “Treats were pina colada and strawberry smoothies, various ‘healthier’ snacks, and some awesome giveaways.”
